Recommendation: 150-200 GSM. Construction sites are tough on tarps β they're exposed to sun, wind, dust, and the occasional sharp tool. 100 GSM will tear within weeks. 150 GSM is the minimum for serious job sites; 180-200 GSM if you want the tarp to last the full project duration.
Agriculture (hay covers, grain piles, equipment)
Recommendation: 120-180 GSM. For seasonal agricultural use, 120-150 GSM gives the best price-to-durability ratio. If you're covering hay or grain that will sit for 6+ months exposed to weather, step up to 180 GSM.
Truck and cargo covers
Recommendation: 180-250 GSM. Trucking applications are demanding β high winds at highway speed, frequent folding and unfolding, abrasion from cargo. 180 GSM minimum, 250 GSM for daily heavy use.
Retail and e-commerce (Amazon, hardware stores)
Recommendation: 100-150 GSM. Retail consumers are price-sensitive and most won't push the tarp to professional limits. 100 GSM works for the budget end of the market; 120-150 GSM is the "premium consumer" tier where you can charge more.

Some Chinese suppliers will quote 100 GSM tarpaulin but ship 70 GSM. Always request a sample before bulk order, weigh it yourself with a kitchen scale (cut a 1m Γ 1m piece) and verify the actual GSM. A reputable factory will not have a problem with this β it's standard practice.
Material quality: virgin vs. recycled PE
Polyethylene tarps can be made from 100% virgin (new) HDPE or from recycled PE. The difference matters more than most buyers realize.
Virgin PE tarps are stronger, more UV-stable, more consistent in color, and last significantly longer. They cost about 15-25% more.
Recycled PE tarps are cheaper but have inconsistent fiber strength, fade faster, and often have a slight gray tint or visible specks in the material. They're fine for short-term use but will disappoint customers expecting durability.

UV stabilization
Standard PE breaks down in sunlight within months. Look for tarps with UV400 or 600-hour UV-stabilizer additives in the formulation. This is non-negotiable for any outdoor application.
Eyelets (grommets)
The eyelets are usually the weakest point of a tarp. Look for:
- Aluminum or stainless steel grommets (not painted iron β those rust)

Hem (edge) reinforcement
