PP vs PE Weed Barrier: What Is the Real Difference?
Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) can both be converted into woven ground-cover fabrics. Buyers often hear simple claims such as “PE always lasts longer” or “PP is always cheaper.” In practice, polymer type is only one part of performance. Tape formulation, fabric construction, UV stabilization, actual weight, installation and climate can matter just as much.

What actually determines service life?
- UV package: sunlight degrades both PP and PE unless the formulation is stabilized for the intended exposure.
- Actual GSM: nominal weight is not useful if delivered fabric is consistently underweight.
- Tape strength and weave: tape width, draw ratio, density and edge construction affect tearing and dimensional stability.
- Climate: solar radiation, temperature, wind, chemicals and altitude change real-world aging.
- Installation: poor anchoring, sharp stones, vehicle traffic and excessive tension can shorten life.
Questions buyers should put in the specification
- Is the material PP or PE, and what recycled content is permitted?
- What is the target GSM and tolerance?
- How will GSM, width and roll length be inspected?
- What UV requirement and test basis apply?
- What are the tensile, tear or strip-strength requirements?
- Does water need to pass through the woven surface?
- What edge finish, guide-line spacing and roll packing are required?
- Will a pre-production sample become the approved reference?
Which one should you buy?
Choose PP when you need a competitive, well-established product for distribution, landscaping, nurseries or retail programs and can define the quality clearly. Choose PE when your market or application already requires a PE woven construction. For both products, compare approved samples and measurable specifications rather than marketing claims.
